Dr. Sharp

Dr. Larry J. Sharp recently completed a 2-year specialty program conferring a Fellowship in Integrative Medicine under the direction of Dr. Andrew Weil. He is continually seeking to expand treatment options and actively pursues emerging knowledge in the field, both in his Fort Worth practice and as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. Larry J. Sharp’s Interests, Education & Background

As a member of the IACFS, an international professional organization for clinicians and researchers to study Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), Dr. Sharp is able to follow current research in the field. He is also a member of two national patient organizations, the CFIDS Association of America and the National CFIDS Foundation. In addition, Dr. Sharp has served on the Board of Directors of the CFS/FM Support Group of DFW for the last several years. He served as Medical Director for the Fort Worth Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Center, Inc. for two years prior to opening the Institute.

As a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine), one of the two forms of medicine in the U.S. allowed to perform surgery and prescribe medication, Dr. Sharp is particularly qualified to treat chronic conditions. The Osteopathic philosophy embraces integrative and preventive concepts that can be utilized to help the body heal, which is particularly advantageous in dealing with CFIDS. Many of the treatment protocols Dr. Sharp utilizes are holistic in their approach to restoring the human body's immune, energetic, metabolic, and hormonal functions. Osteopaths are trained to correct structural disturbances, which can be very useful in treating chronic conditions.

Dr. Sharp’s first specialization was in the field of Medical Technology, a background that makes him particularly skilled in utilizing modern laboratory science in functional medicine. He has also had the distinct privilege of working with Dr. Paul Cheney, an internationally-renowned expert who has contributed inestimably to our knowledge of this debilitating illness. Dr. Sharp is familiar with Dr. Cheney’s current treatment protocol, and has worked directly with Dr. Wm Lee Cowden, a renowned energy medicine specialist who has had great success with the treatment of many chronic conditions, including CFIDS, Cancer, and Lyme Disease.

Areas of interest/treatment include:
1. Structural Medicine - Osteopathic manipulative treatment, addressing structural problems, cranio-sacral manipulation

4. Microbiology/Immunology
5. Biochemistry

About Us

From the moment you step inside The Institute of Health & Wellness, you sense the difference. A warm smile…soft music…a hot cup of tea…a kind ear. Our patients tell us it’s these little things that help them feel understood and empowered when it comes to their healthcare choices. This compassion we have for each individual comes easy, because we practice one simple, shared philosophy: We treat others as we would like to be treated.

It’s a credo that lies at the very core of everything we do. Our patients are living proof.
A board-certified physician in practice since 1985, Dr. Larry J. Sharp was practiced in the science of ‘natural’ medicine long before it became a buzzword.

Dr. Sharp’s interest in immune-related illnesses evolved naturally when, in 1987, his wife, Jackie, became seriously ill and just couldn’t bounce back after a ski trip to Lake Tahoe. Dr. Sharp took on a new mission as his wife’s symptoms worsened and her illness evaded a diagnosis; he burned the midnight oil, intensified his research and, meanwhile, began to recognize similar symptoms among some of his patients. Over time, he came to understand the cause of his wife’s painful unraveling: Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Shortly thereafter, his son was also diagnosed with CFIDS at the age of two years. Now, Dr. Sharp’s early crusade carries over into his daily care of CFIDS and FM patients. And his family’s ongoing battle is never far from his mind.

“I’ve seen firsthand just how difficult this disease can be,” observes Dr. Sharp. “not only for the patient, but also for the family members and friends who care for the person who is suffering. But I also know you CAN fight these illnesses and come out with a win.”

Some 20 years later, Dr. Sharp is regarded as a leading authority on these and other immune-related illnesses, including Lyme Disease, Hormonal Imbalances, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), Auto-immunity, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). He travels both in the United States and abroad to lecture on current protocols and practices, and oversees clinical trials to explore the evolution of medicines and patients’ treatment choices. He focuses exclusively on fatiguing illnesses, and has attended seminars given by Paul Cheney, MD, PhD; Wm. Lee Cowden, MD; Jacob Teitlebaum, MD; Jeffrey Bland, PhD; Anthony Komaroff, MD; and Charles Lapp, MD, among others.
